School counseling services are confidential. The CDC found that students are more likely to seek help if counseling and mental health services were kept confidential. Protecting your child's right to privacy is very important to the school counseling program at WE. If serious issues arise during counseling with your child, Ms. Hassen will notify you. Such issues include: Your child is being hurt, your child wants to hurt someone else, or your child wants to hurt him/herself.
Classroom guidance lessons are provided to all students, kindergarten through fourth grade, at Washington Elementary. Topics vary per grade level and are based on data collected from student, staff, and parent surveys.
Check out the topics for classroom guidance in the December Classroom Guidance Connection.
Look ahead! Check out January's Classroom Guidance Connection!
If your child is experiencing difficulty managing life changes, emotions, or behavior, they are welcome to meet with Ms. Hassen for individual counseling. Students may choose on their own to schedule an appointment with Ms. Hassen or they may be referred by a parent/guardian or staff member.
In fourth grade, all students are encouraged to apply for Character Council. This group is an opportunity for fourth graders to engage in service projects. Through these projects, students gain leadership, organization, and collaboration skills. All students who apply for Character Council are selected for participation and assigned to service projects based on their stated interests.
Character Council's staff leadership include Ms. Hassen, the school counselor, and Ms. Ramsey, the ELL/Spanish teacher. If you have questions concerning Character Council, please direct them to Ms. Hassen or Ms. Ramsey.
