In recent years, the Mount Vernon Community School District has invested significantly in its educational facilities. More than $20 million has been invested in building a new high school, renovating the old high school to become a more modern home for the middle school, and now expanding the elementary school to meet the needs of a growing student population. While these projects rightfully prioritized classroom needs, the school district faces many challenges in bringing its athletic facilities up to modern standards. Immediately, the historic football field is in need of improvements and your financial support. As you might have read in a recent SUN article, alumni, friends and community members have generously donated toward renovations to the football field. From these contributions, $33,000 has been invested in lighting improvements, additional lights and the purchase of a new scoreboard. The next step was the replacement of the wooden home-side bleachers at the football field. In February 2014, the Mount Vernon Community School Board has also pledged $49,999 toward the renovation. But our efforts are not finished. We will be continuing to raise funds so that any money over and above the amount needed for the football field can be saved and used toward other needed improvements, including, but not limited to the tennis courts, and track.
